Marking its first debut in the Netherlands, the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague will organize the Pasar Malam Indonesia, a big promotion event scheduled to be held on 1 – 5 April 2010 in Malieveld, The Hague. With the support of the city of The Hague and many other parties, this event is dedicated to promote Indonesia’s Trade Tourism and Investment (TTI) potentials as well as introduce its unique culture.

Pasar Malam Indonesia will showcase Indonesian export quality products from various Small and Medium Enterprises in Indonesia and provide the opportunity to promote new exciting tourist destinations in Indonesia. The event will also bring new investment prospects in a number of Indonesian provinces to be considered by potential Dutch corporations.

At the Pasar Malam, visitors could savor unique Indonesian cuisine in a “food court” style at the restaurant area and enjoy the performance of a number of Dutch artists of Indonesian origin as well as Indonesian prominent artists presenting music and cultural dance from various region in Indonesia.

The event will be participated by a number of institutions, namely the Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board, Ministry of Education and several Regional Governments.

During the event, the Embassy will also organize side events, namely business meetings, table top meeting, cultural roadshow, etc.

Het Malieveld is een grasveld in Den Haag, dat vooral bekend is als demonstratieplaats. De grootste massademonstratie, met 550.000 betogers, op 29 oktober 1983, was gericht tegen de plaatsing van nieuwe kernwapens in Nederland.

Oorspronkelijk was het Malieveld onderdeel van het Haagse Bos. Aan het begin van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog werd echter een deel van het Haagse Bos gekapt om een stadswal rond Den Haag te bouwen. Omdat de Spanjaarden Den Haag bezetten, werd het hout gebruikt door de Spanjaarden in hun verdediging tegen de opstandelingen.

Doordat het die jaren flink regende, spoelde de vruchtbare grond weg en is het bos op de plaats van het Malieveld nooit meer teruggekomen. In 1594 werd daarom besloten het Malieveld (dat nog uit duinen bestond) verder af te graven. Hierdoor ontstond de grasvlakte, die tot op de dag van vandaag bestaat.

Vanaf 1606 werd het grasveld gebruikt om het spel Malie (of Palmalie) te spelen. Dit spel, een voorloper van golf en croquet, was populair onder de Engelse en Franse Adel. Het Malieveld dankt zijn naam aan dit spel.

Rond 1705 werd het Malieveld flink ingekort door de uitbreiding van Den Haag. De Prinsessegracht werd verlengd en werd de nieuwe grens van het Malieveld.

Tegenwoordig doet het Malieveld dienst als plaats voor demonstraties, militaire parades (een traditie van ongeveer 400 jaar), kermissen, festivals en de Pasar Malam Besar, die vanaf 2009 Tong Tong Fair heet.
