Ambassador Retno Marsudi to Strengthen Indonesia-Netherlands Special Ties
“The special and unique relationship between Indonesia and the Netherlands must be well managed in order to ensure a mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries,” Ambassador (designate) Retno Marsudi recently said. The first Indonesian lady ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, arriving today, 13 January 2012, is expected to bring fresh ideas and energy to further strengthen the bilateral ties. With her extensive diplomatic experience, she is well equipped to further promote Indonesia’s interests in the Netherlands as an important partner in trade, investment and tourism as well as gateway to Europe.
Ambassador Retno Marsudi served as Director General of America and Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from April 2008 until January 2012, overseeing Indonesia’s relations with 87 countries in Europe and the Americas. She is first female senior official in the history of the Ministry to ever hold such position.
Prior to that, she served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Norway and the Republic of Iceland from 2005-2008. Ambassador Marsudi received Order of Merit (Grand Officer, the second highest decoration)from the King of Norway; making her the first Indonesian receiving this particular decoration.
Ambassador Marsudi has also led various rounds of multilateral negotiation and bilateral consultation between Indonesia and its counterparts. including the European Union, the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC). She has also held various high offices within the Ministry, including Director for West European Affairs (2003-2005) and Director of Inter-Regional Cooperation in Europe and the Americas (2001-2003).
The Hague is not a new territory for Ambassador Marsudi as she served as Economic Conselor a the Indonesian Embassy from 1997-2001. She is looking forward to meet old friends and to make new ones, to enjoy jogging and bicycling, and to continuously promote Indonesian food and restaurants in the Netherlands.
