Indonesian Art and Culture Attracts the Dutch Youngster |

Starting the second day, 30 March 2012, Pasar Malam Indonesia received student visit of the Oranje Nassau Elementary School and the International School of The Hague.  As many as 150 elementary school students looked enthusiastic over the exhibition booths showcasing a wide range of local handicrafts, batik garments, and a number of traditional jewelry trinkets. A short course of Gamelan Jawa has also become a point of attraction to the students. Apart of the appearance of the cultural arts, Pasar Malam also offers authentic Indonesian cuisine to the students. Most of the students have never tried this spicy flavor of typical Indonesian authentic foods. A forum of public dialogue was also held in the second day of Pasar Malam Indonesia 2012. Pasar Malam held this forum in cooperation with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia, taking topic of “Indonesia Baru dalam Perspektif Ekonomi dan Politik”. Three speakers attended the forum, namely: Firmansyah (Den of the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia), Malik Gizman (Lecturer of the University Paramadina), and Suprawoto (Expert Staff of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics).  The dialogue mainly discussed about the current development of political situation, economy, and democracy in Indonesia that recently central heated-up with civil commotion protesting the hike of gasoline price. The speakers also mentioned that this situation is a part of the process toward transparency, marking a “point of no return” in the democratization of Indonesia. During the night of second day, Pasar Malam also featured attractive performance of G-Pluck (Indonesian Beatles), Ello, Maria and Naomi ex-Mollucas, and, closed with a spectacular appearance of Denada, which drew much attention of the Dutch.
