National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh said Tuesday that the culture of research in schools throughout the country had improved to the point where they could now compete with universities.

“The work of school students is comparable to that of university students. It shows that the quality of research is improving,” he said at the Indonesian Students’ Research Olympics (OPSI), as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Nuh said that he was impressed by the quality of research showed at the exhibition. However, he added that the government had no plans to have this work patented, but instead preferred to focus on developing students' hunger for knowledge.

“People who are willing to undertake research have a sense of intellectual curiosity. That is what we must develop,” he said.

The event played host to research in the fields of humanity, basic science and applied science.

This year’s OPSI, its third consecutive event, involved 25 judges from national universities to select three winners.
