Director for Legal Affairs and Territorial Treaties, Bebeb A.K.N. Djundjunan, gave a speech on “Established Marine Environmental Protection Around the South China Sea: An Indonesian Approach” at the ASEAN-China Workshop on the Marine Environmental Protection in the South China Sea.
In his speech, Mr. Djundjunan shared Indonesia’s best practices as an approach to better understand how ASEAN+China would establish Marine Environmental Protection (MEP) in the South China Sea. Ideas on how to structure a MEP scheme were also conveyed, which spotted issues such as forum determination, scoping, instrument formulation, and linking established modalities and networks with proposals in the short, medium and long run. The workshop is organized jointly by the Kingdom of Thailand and the People’s Republic of China in Phuket, Thailand, 11-13 July 2018.
In his presentation, Mr Djundjunan introduced ways and means towards Indonesia experiences as well as the country's legal perspectives. Possible mechanisms are offered in establishing cooperation in the South China Sea on marine environmental protection, such as overfishing, marine/plastic debris and how to structure a MEP scheme.
Further, Director Bebeb also introduced a proper way to undertake the issue in ASEAN China forum, forms of mechanism and its related instruments as well as modalities in term of plan by short, medium or long periods.
