"USA's position should be appreciated and followed up with concrete cooperation when the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Concept is implemented in 2019", he added.
In that regard, the Chief of USA Delegation, Patrick Murphy positively welcomed Indonesia's statement. "We will continue to play an active role in various ASEAN mechanisms, such as the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Forum, and fully support the open, transparent, and inclusive ASEAN Indo-Pacific Concept, with ASEAN in its center," he highlighted.
Furthermore, the USA Delegation Chief also appreciated the High-Level Dialogue (HLD) on Indo-Pacific Cooperation in Jakarta on March 20, 2019. In his view, the HLD had succeeded in affirming many similar principles and elements of the Indo-Pacific Concept promoted by the USA and ASEAN.
The issue of terrorism and extreme violence were also highlighted at the Meeting. "The threats of terrorism and extreme violence still exist around us. The tragic humanitarian incident in Christchurch, New Zealand and Utrecht, the Netherlands and also in Indonesia call for a crucial prevention against the growing roots of extremism in various communities. To overcome it, there is no other way but strengthening the international cooperation," he explained.
With this regard, the Meeting agreed to strengthen the cross-country collaboration in building capacity and sharing intelligence information among the security forces. Indonesia also affirmed the strategic role of youth as the "Peace Ambassadors" that should spread the values of peace and anti-violence.
The 32nd ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue is the annual High-Level Official Meeting between ASEAN and the USA. The meeting was jointly chaired by the USA and Laos (as the coordinating countries of the ASEAN-USA Cooperation) and attended by delegations from ASEAN countries, US, and ASEAN Secretariat.
The meeting discussed various matters of mutual interests, including regional and international issues, and the development and future direction of ASEAN-USA Cooperation in the maritime affairs, cybersecurity, terrorism, trade and investment, disaster management, education, youth, and women.
The ASEAN-USA Cooperation was established in 1972. The USA officially became ASEAN's Dialogue Partner in 1977 and has been at the Strategic Partnership level since 2015.
Throughout the process, the ASEAN and USA Cooperation has progressively developed. The measure is reflected by the ASEAN-USA Plan of Action 2016-2020 that covers political and security, economic, and socio-cultural fields.
